Anne Siems' ongoing interest in expressions of personal experience via the body, dreams, spirituality and time form the underlying themes and ideas from which her paintnigs emerge.
Ms. Siems creates a narrative from aspects of everyday life. The artist incorporates new and antique objects as well as organic elements into her paintings. In her most recent body of work her personal iconography of women surrounded by or connected to butterflies, birds and ornamental elements is painted in detail in front of a backdrop of veils and washes of color.
Siems has been fascinated with portrait photography since her youth and her first impulse for these paintings is derived from 19th Century photographs. The final image emerges in a process that is uninterrupted by analysis and is moved by free association from a visceral place.
The artist, who was born in Germany, currently lives in the northwestern US. A Fulbright Scholar, she has exhibited widely throughout the country. Her work is included in various important collections including the Arkansas Art Center, Boise Art Museum, Microsoft Collection, and the Tacoma Art Museum.
