Clark Gallery is honored to present Andrew Stevovich: Petals on a Bough from November 7 through November 29, 2007. The exhibition includes recent paintings and an exclusive selection of prints and original drawings. A full color catalogue accompanies the solo show, which will be celebrated with an opening reception on Saturday, November 10th from 4-6pm.
Andrew Stevovich depicts people, alone and in groups, with flattened features and almond-shaped, oblique eyes. His figures are mysterious and compelling, appearing engrossed in a moment of inner reflection or speechless observation of surrounding figures. In some instances his figures are portrayed in a busy, public domain such as a casino, coffee shop, or subway station. But these paintings feel just as quiet and suspended as the intimate views of a woman sitting alone at a bar, a woman catching a butterfly, and a woman holding a gingko leaf.
Stevovich has said, “the painting is about humanity—desire, envy, fear, happiness and sadness, a lot about women, men and women.” His paintings contain a psychological component that lends to a tension existing throughout his work, pushed by the contemplative gazes of his figures despite the implied energy of his scenes.
Stevovich is a master colorist whose work references foundations in color field and abstract painting. His compositions are built with color and form, which are manipulated to direct the gaze of the viewer. The flatness of his imagery, his precise line composition, and chromatic color forms are accentuated by the porcelain-smooth surfaces of his oil on linen paintings. Indeed, Stevovich’s precise approach to painting comes through in his etchings and line drawings. His talents as a painter and draughtsman are matched.
This exhibition follows the recent release of Andrew Stevovich: Essential Elements, a significant monograph documenting Stevovich’s thirty-year painting career. The book, presented by Hard Press Editions and Adelson Galleries, Inc., will be available throughout the exhibition and will be signed by the artist during Clark’s opening reception.
Recognized as a leading American painter, Andrew Stevovich has been featured in exhibitions at the Danforth Museum of Art, DeCordova Museum and Sculpture Park, Fuller Craft Museum, New Britain Museum of American Art, Connecticut, and Portland Museum of Art, Maine. Stevovich earned his BFA from the Rhode Island School of Design and his MFA from Massachusetts College of Art, Boston. His work is represented in public and private collections worldwide.
A concurrent exhibition, Solitary Demons, is being presented by the Danforth Museum of Art through December 2, 2007. Petals on a Bough travels to Clark from Adelson Galleries, Inc., New York, where it was featured throughout the month of October.
