We are honored to present concurrent solo exhibitions by Squeak Carnwath and Joel Janowitz through November 22.
Squeak Carnwath's exhibition of painings entitled: Recent and Now, are ruminations on time, place, and human presence. Within her images Carnwath constructs a unique vocabulary of pictographs and hieroglyphs that constitute a personal index of meaning. Her distinctive and recognizable style combines diaristic elements with universal or existential themes. Squeak’s sumptuously painted classic abstractions are accentuated with scrawling text and representational flourishes on abstract fields of color expressing deeply personal, sociopolitical and spiritual concerns.
Ms. Carnwath's work is represented in numerous museum collections including: The Metropolitan Museum of Art, Yale University Art Museum, San Francisco MOMA. Norton Museum of Art, Oaklansd Museum of Art and others.

Joel Janowitz's exhibition is entitled Finding Yourself There. His oil paintings, watercolors and monotypes investigate how pictorial space carries meaning and psychological charge. His works, often exeuted in series, explore how color, light, and paint develop into shifting experiences of contemplative spatial encounters. Featured in the exhibition are a series of images with Venetian footbridges serving as the central subject. The arching form creates simple yet dramatic visual structures that connect the viewer to the pictorial space experienced in the painting. With changing perspectives and angles of light, abstract forms of shadows and reflections intersect and coexist with forms of the bridge.
Janowitz is a recent 2013 recipient of a prestigious John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Foundation Fellowship. His work can be found in numerous public collections including: the Whitney Museum of American Art, The Metropolitan Museum of Art, The Broklyn Muaseum, The Museum of Fine ARts Boston and others.
