2002 / First Edition

Published by Arena Editions

A book celebrating Atget’s career as well as that of Berenice Abbott, a photographer and collector of Atget’s work. Features previously unpublished plates of Atget’s work.

Abbott dedicated herself to the printing and preservation of Atget’s work for 40 years. Abbott’s career first began in New York where she studied photography and painting. Given the opportunity to travel abroad, Abbott landed in Paris and worked under Man Ray as a portrait photographer. During her time there she was first introduced to Atget’s work and underwent an immense study of his portfolio. After Atget’s death in 1927, Abbott acquired part of his collection of prints and negatives left in his studio. Through her work in Paris she met Penny Guggenheim and through her support, Abbott launched her own photography career. Beginning with portraiture, Abbott also expanded her repertoire throughout the years into the field of scientific photography and later teaching. For a time Abbott put her own career on hold to focus on studying Atget’s vast portfolio and working to preserve and spread his legacy in the field of photography. Abbott eventually returned back to New York, where she continued to spread Atget’s work and further her own career.

Condition: Hardcover. Book itself is in pristine condition, kept in mylar with only slight shelf wear to the corners of the book.
