Leonard Freed (1929–2006) was inspired to document the African American experience after traveling to Berlin in 1962 to photograph the construction of the Berlin Wall. There, he encountered a Black American soldier standing guard and was struck by the contradiction of a man defending American freedom abroad while African Americans at home were fighting for basic civil rights. This realization led Freed to travel through New York, Washington, D.C., and across the American South, where he photographed the struggle to end racial segregation. First published in 1968, Black in White America presents a wide spectrum of Black life in the 1960s, from political marches and rallies to everyday moments such as children playing in fire-hydrant spray, as well as scenes of segregation and interactions between Black and white Americans.
Condition: Softcover. Very good condition.
