Clark Gallery is honored to present Jane Smaldone: New Paintings.
Smaldone's magical paintings combine her long-standing interest in still life, portraiture, and landscape, interweaving the genres into a highly personal style. Inspired by art historical traditions as diverse and far-reaching as Chinese landscape painting, the Italian Renaissance, Mexican retablos and miracle paintings, French Surrealism, Early American portraiture, and folk art, Jane fuses her historical references into potent contemporary hybrids. Birds, butterflies and foxes inhabiting worlds of fantastic flowers, auspicious trees and rounded mountains become compositions of highly poetic, symbolic and magical narratives.
Smaldone's work is included in many private, corporate and public collections internationally, including the Peabody Essex Museum, Wellington Management, and the Danforth Museum. Her work has been the subject of numerous solo shows in the United States and Canada.
Following a long winter we are happy to present the companion exhibition April Flowers, featuring the work of James Aponovich, Richard Baker, Ruth Bauer, Elli Crocker, Robin Freedenfeld, Barbara Kassel, Eleanor Miller, Kevin Sloan, Juan Travieso, Eric Wert
